CWA was appointed in 2007 to remodel and refurbish a Victorian home and a 1980’s extension.
The project whose strikingly creative fusion of historic and new architecture generated significant local interest.
The buildings in the scheme are in the Maida Vale Conservation Area, adjacent to the Grade II listed Portuguese synagogue. The 1980s element typifies the problematic legacy of pastiche architecture of that period.
The extension’s elevations were remodelled, re-clad and carefully detailed to refer specifically to the proportions of the Victorian elevations of the building adjoining it, and to acknowledge the architecture of other notable historic buildings in the surrounding area, whilst rejecting the requirement for emulation.
A basement and additional first floor are created within the existing volume, a condition set by planners.
The two buildings are linked by a precisely expressed full-height glazed entrance hall defining the newly remodelled elevations of the 1980’s façade against the listed Victorian building.
