The clients for this house had bought the property for its location and had become frustrated by the limitations of the cellular Edwardian layout. Motivated by the requirement to re configure the multi-storey semi, we identified the importance of the segregation of formal, from informal living areas, while making it possible for the young family to focus on social interaction in their day to day living.
The house is linked horizontally (and vertically) by a 30metre circulation corridor. On arrival at the property by the front door, it is possible to see the furthest point of the garden 100metres away.
Planning consent was achieved to locate a large glass and cedar extension to the rear of the house, providing an additional 450 ft2 kitchen and family space at ground level. Above, a large private balcony off the master bedroom at first floor is constructed partly of load bearing roof lights which enforce the linearity of the spine corridor below.
The top two floors and loft were extensively remodelled to contain four bedrooms and a music room to accommodate the client’s love of the drums!
